What is Health College Connection?

The Health College Connection Program (HCCP) is designed to identify, prepare, and increase the number of minority and disadvantaged students entering health care careers from Alabama’s underserved Black Belt counties. The program provides information on healthcare and careers in healthcare.  Participants will explore several healthcare career opportunities, requirements for college admission, and educational and licensure/certification requirements for practice. As appropriate, participants will be paired with healthcare professionals for a shadowing experience.

How is the program conducted?

HCCP is held each summer.  Specific dates to be determined. Because of COVID-19, an abbreviated program was delivered virtually for two-weeks in July.

What to expect?

Participants will engage with healthcare professionals, students, administrators, and educators that will provide guidance as to how to prepare academically for admission to a healthcare program, as well as what to expect as a professional. The program will be delivered virtually and/or in-person as appropriate.

What will participants do in the program?

Participants will

  • engage in classroom sessions and complete required assignments;
  • learn about the structure of the health care system, the importance of health, differences between health and wellness and identify a career preference;
  • be assigned, as appropriate, to a health care professional to shadow and learn the daily requirements for the health care profession;
  • attend other assigned activities;
  • complete and present research projects; and
  • meet representatives from healthcare professional schools.

What support will the participants receive?

Participants who successfully complete program requirements will receive a stipend.

Who should apply?

HCCP is open to high school students grades 9 – 12, freshmen and sophomore college students.  Participants must be in good standing at the school and have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 for high school students and 2.5 for college students.
